Decided that Facebook wasn't really my scene and prefer to correspond on email with people. However, Facebook assures me that I can login again using the same login and password at a later date should I change my mind. Used their privacy setting, wrote some comments on a friend's wall, commented on some picture and used the 'share' facility. I investigated the Ning social network but couldn't find a group that was interested in the particular thing I collect. I saw some professional groups such as interior decorators and architects, that had a Ning group. I also noted that some of the groups were by invitation only. How do they know that a certain person is out there waiting to be invited?

Wanted to get into the buzz and try Facebook for Social networking. I was a bit confused to remember yet another password! I was also a little wary having read the overview as to how to maintain privacy. I had a good look at the profile I was setting up and also set the parameters so that I need not share every time I connected to a new (old) friend. etc. etc. With so many stoppers I wonder that I will ever be found by anybody!
I certainly think that this would be good for networking at a Library Conference especially as I found on a conference that at the end we were all madly exchanging phone numbers and email addresses. Nice to keep in touch until the next scheduled gathering.

Hope you will be able to look at Becoming Queensland a new virtual exhibition put together by Anna Haebich, our Historian in Residence. The Exhibition was launched to commemorate Queensland's 150 Year Birthday. Members of staff were asked to share about items from Heritage Collections that were important and showed something of that Queensland Spirit. I chose the Nicholson Family Album and it is showcased in this beautiful exhibition.

So maybe Tripadvisor is a kind of wiki? You can give people advice on good hotels, tell them of Basil Fawlty hotels, what's the best train route to see the French Alps, etc.It has a search engine and forums on different countries. I have posted information and photographs on a Swiss Guesthouse, hotel I found. Arbitrarily 2 Star but the best views and breakfast I had over a six week period. Just for the record Irish Eyes recommends Lynam's in Dublin on O'Connell Street http://www.lynams-hotel.com/location.html

Viewing the wiki demonstration

Viewed the example of the use of the wiki to coordinate a trip. Concept was good but at this point I can't think of an example of where I could use one in my job description. I see similarities with O common file where anyone can add or change information. Still thinking and have had a look at the University of Tasmania wiki.

Informal networking

Attended a good session with my work unit and discussed this project. Saw a great demonstration from one of the bloggers and looked at various applications. The session was light, and gave everyone some great ideas. If we were feeling a bit jaded or tentative about going on with the project or even starting, we felt a bit more confident after that --well that was the aim of the session organised by our Manager. Shared some good pages and had a few light bulb moments, realised that I had been in the World of Wikis all along with our Heritage Wiki. Thank goodness for Ann's wonderful enthusiasm and thoroughness! My partner wonders how I can blog and do my work at the same time Ah!, but it is work!

Very wrapt to have joined Flickr and put up some more photograhs. http://www.flickr.com/photos/clifden06/Tried Smugmugs but it was much more difficult than Flickr. I had a chance to learn how to load images on Flickr Commons at work. Also it's free! Tried to join Smugmugs for the 14 day trial but it may have just been technical difficulties online. Anyhow the look and feel was different. I receive frequent updates from family members on Photo share websites.

I enjoyed looking at the Flickr Commons images especially recapping some of the bicycle pictures. Saw the photographs made a feature on Indicommons under the heading ''I love to ride my bicycle" seems to have a universal appeal!

Here's a handy map of the Ring of Kerry with some of the main stops on the way. Although it is a well travelled route, if you start early in the morning and travel anti-clockwise, you can avoid a great deal of traffic. We saw deer grazing beside the road early in the morning.

On an evening walk we found hedgerows of wild fuchsias next to an old brick barn on the outskirts of Clifden, Galway. I couldn't get over seeing these growing wild since we cultivate them in our gardens. I used an automatic flash setting on my camera.

I love this shot because it was taken in October and the trees are turning colour. I can't imagine how the roots of the tree cling on to the rock surface so strongly that they don't wash away in the current.
